About Casa do Povo

Casa do Povo is a cultural center that revisits and reinvents notions of culture, community, and memory. It was established in 1946 by Jewish migrants living in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, downtown São Paulo in memory of the victims of the Shoah. It aimed to keep up with the struggle against fascism thanks to the promotion of its Yiddish, secular and critical culture. Casa do Povo opened its doors in 1953. Its theater - the TAIB [Brazilian Israelite Artistic Theater] opened in 1960 in its basement.

After facing an institutional crisis from the 1980s to the 2000s, Casa do Povo regained its prominence in the cultural scene starting in 2012. Today it is home to dozens of groups, movements, and collectives. Casa do Povo operates in the expanded field of culture. Its transdisciplinary, process-driven, and engaged programming views art as a critical tool for social transformation. With no fixed schedule and flexible hours, Casa do Povo adapts to the specific needs of each project, supporting both local neighborhood associations and experimental artistic initiatives that defy conventional norms.

Its core areas of work (memory, collectiveness, dialogue and community building) are shaped by contemporary contexts while maintaining a deep connection to its historical Jewish and humanist roots. Casa do Povo is one of the heirs of the Yiddishland in the Americas.
